Erg Chigaga Desert Trip from Marrakech 4 days Itinerary

1st day: Marrakech – Ouarzazate

Travel over the often-snow-covered Atlas Mountains and drive via the famous Tizi-n-Tichka. All along the road, you will stop at panoramic viewpoints to admire the beautiful setting of the valleys and the Berber villages.

After descending the Atlas Mountains, a side road leads to the famous and former residential palace, Kasbah Telouet. Tour the kasbah to discover Moroccan tiling artwork and wood and silver craftsmanship that decorates the ceiling and the doors of the kasbah.

After a scenic drive along the beautiful Ounila Valley, you will arrive at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a favourite film location for several Hollywood blockbusters.

After lunch in one of the restaurants alongside the Salt River, you will visit the kasbah with a local guide. Learn about the history and the cinematic artworks that were filmed on this site.

Arrive at Ouarzazate by the end of the afternoon. Tour the local souk and sip a glass of tea overlooking the main square of Ouarzazate. At night, a beautiful riad offers dinner and a night’s rest.

2nd day: Ouarzazate – Erg Lihoudi Dunes

Following a traditional breakfast in your riad, continue your Erg Chigaga desert trip from Marrakech. Travel over the Middle Atlas Mountains and via the Tizi-n-Tinfifte pass. After Agdz, visit Kasbah Tamnougalte and explore the unlimited palm tree fields and photograph the fortified Kasbahs.

Continue travelling south alongside the ancient Road of the Caravans as far as Zagora, the last town before the Sahara Desert. Visit the local green pottery co-operatives and the ancient Quranic library. After lunch, you continue further south as far as M’hamid, the end of the paved road, and the last villages before the desert.

From here, an hour to an hour and a half camel ride leads to the wind-blown sand dunes of Erg Lihoudi. Climb to the summit of the dunes to witness the spectacle of the sunset and enjoy moments of pure peacefulness.

At night, dinner is served under the starlit sky of the Sahara Desert. Share an evening of Berber music and drumming with the nomads around a fire camp. Stay in a private nomad tent in a desert camp among the dunes.

3rd day: Erg Lihoudi Dunes – Erg Chagaga Dunes

Get up early in the morning and ascend the summit of the dunes. You will be reward with an amazing spectacle of the sunrise and experience pure moments of peacefulness.

After breakfast is served at the camp, you will drive through the sand dunes and the unlimited palm trees to the M’hamid. After lunch, you continue your Marrakech to Erg Chigaga desert tour, driving through the varying features of the Sahara Desert.

In the camp, you will be welcomed by traditional tea and Moroccan biscuits and shown in your private tent. Shortly after, enjoy an hour to an hour and a half camel ride around the admirably high dunes of Erg Chigaga. From the summit of the dunes (300m), the sunset is a spectacular sight.

4th day: Erg Chagaga Dunes – Marrakech

Wake up early in the morning and climb up to the summit of Erg Chigaga dunes. Witness the much talked about sunset of the Sahara Desert.

Back at the camp, breakfast is served, then you continue your Erg Chigaga desert trip from Marrakech. Experience off-road driving through the different landscapes of the Sahara Desert.

Stop at the dry Iriqui Lake and search for fossils. Shortly after, you will arrive in Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert and the venue for lunch. In Taznakht, learn about the Berber rugs and carpets craftsmanship and perhaps buy one, if desired!
